Your Calgary Roofing company: Expert residential roofing

A new roof is usually a necessity but it can also improve the appearance of your home’s exterior. Replacing worn shingles in outdated colours will enhance the overall curb appeal or your home and ensure the building envelope is protected.

Why Choose Us as your roofing Company?

We take building envelope protection seriously. As your residential roofing contractors, we take the time to ensure that all the components for proper water shedding are included. This includes drip edge and ice and water shield in eaves and valleys.

Drip edge and ice and water shield are not required under the Alberta Building Code; however, we would never recommend forgoing this additional layer of roofing protection. In addition, diverters are extremely important at specific areas to ensure your potential weak spots are protected from water penetration.

Some residential roofing contractors apply ice and water shield to the entire roof, but we don’t recommend that practice. Ice and water shield is difficult to remove. Typically, the sheathiing under it will have to be ripped up when the roof needs to be re-done in the future, which will be more expensive for the homeowner. Ice and water shield is also impermeable, so it could hamper the breathability of your house if it’s on the entire roof.

When we come out to measure your roof so we can prepare a quote for you, we’ll also examine whether your house has adequate venting. If it does not, we will add vents to bring your home up to the current building code when we install the roof. This will help ensure your house can breath so that condensation or mold growth don’t become a costly issue.

Our Services: Roof Replacement and Repairs

At The Exteriors Group, we work with all types of roofing material and can do complete re-roofing, roofing repairs, and install flashing.

Asphalt Shingles

The benefits of roofing with asphalt shingles:

  1. The most economical option, although there is quite a price range depending on the durability desired.
  2. Generally the easiest to install.
  3. Fairly low maintenance.
  4. Lighter coloured shingles reflect heat, reducing energy costs and preventing UV damage to the roofing.

While just about anyone can install asphalt shingles, it takes very specialized knowledge to do it well. Without a keen understanding all the elements of the building envelope by your roofing contractor, premature leaks are very likely to occur.

Rubber Roofing

Euroshield® rubber roofing is a highly durable roofing material and an excellent environmental alternative to other types of roofing. Contains about 70% recycled tire rubber and 95% overall recycled content.

  1. Comes with a limited lifetime warranty.
  2. Hail warranty coverage is provided for hail up to two inches in diameter.

Since this is a premium product that will last a lifetime, it’s extremely important to ensure your roofing company uses a similar quality underlayment.

Cedar Shakes / Shingles

The benefits of cedar shake/cedar shingle roofing include:

  1. Cedar has a natural beauty that is hard to match by other roofing materials. As it weathers, it becomes silvery grey that adds character to your home.
  2. It is a very durable and completely biodegradable material.
  3. Cedar has excellent insulating properties, helping to reduce heating and cooling costs.

One of the drawbacks of cedar however, is that it prefers a moist climate. It may not last as long in Calgary’s dry climate as it would in its native B.C., and may also require more maintenance.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofing has come a long way in recent years and is available in styles that look like shingles, shakes, clay tile, and even stone.

Metal roofing has two big benefits—the unique, high-end appearance and durability. It also reflects radiant heat, helping you save energy costs during the day.

Metal is not a good insulator but leaving a dead-air space between the metal shingles and the roof deck can improve energy efficiency. This space also allows any moisture that gets through the roofing to dry out.

Rain and hail hitting a metal roof can be noisy so you may want to consider using structural barriers and insulations. Softer metals like copper may also dent.

Roofing Repairs

Diagnosing and repairing roof leaks can be tricky as there are so many components to the roof system. For example, the leak may be caused by a problem with the shingles, the flashings, the valleys, or the ice dam.

Also, many roof leaks aren ’t leaks at all. They ’re actually problems with condensation and heat loss that can easily be repaired by ensuring there is enough venting in your soffit system and airflow vents on the rooftop.

It’s important that your roofing contractor understands all the elements of a building envelope system in order to find an effective solution to your problem.

Roof and Chimney Flashing

Roof and chimney flashing is a critical component of your home ’s water shedding system. Custom roof flashing, cut and installed to fit your roof ’s unique features, is part of every roof we do to ensure your building envelope is protected for the long term.

Flashing reinforces the material on your roof and prevents leaks. It directs water away from valleys, skylights, chimneys, and where walls meet the roof. Flashing is also necessary along eaves.

Roof flashing should always be installed by a professional roofing company experienced with protecting building envelopes.

Other Roofing Options

We also install specialty roofing products like Gerard’s coated metal roof system and Unicrete concrete roof tiles. Unicrete is no longer in business but we have access to a large supply of the tiles and can secure the product for you if you prefer the elegant look of this heavyweight, noncombustible roof material.
